Heat Shrinkable Sleeve
for Pipeline Protection

Heat shrinkable sleeves are used to cover the welding seams of steel pipes buried in soil or submerged in water.

Heat Shrinkable Sleeve (HSS) can be a suitable solution for covering welding seams in pipes and pipelines with a three-layer polyethylene coating or FBE, etc. to prevent corrosion of steel lines. These sleeves are known worldwide as a reliable solution. Niakimia has more than ten years of experience in producing types of heat shrinkable tape:

1- Three-layer hotmelt heat shrinkable Sleeve that has excellent adhesion

2- Two-layer mastic heat shrinkable sleeve that is easier to apply and sticks directly to the pipe surface.

Why is heat shrinkable coating used to cover pipelines?

With the emergence of factory coatings such as 3PLE and the use of FBE in the pipe body, a major problem has arisen. Now, what coating should be recommended for the welded parts of these pipes that cannot be coated in advance and require welding at the project site that will create properties similar to the pipe body? Heat shrinkable tapes are the best solution available for covering the welded parts of pipes that have been coated in the factory.

Corrosion is one of the main dangers that threatens all steel pipes, and with the increasing knowledge and the greater need of mankind to transfer energy resources, many ways have been created to prevent corrosion of metal pipelines, and over time, old methods have been replaced by new and more effective methods.

These tapes, with resistance to corrosion, water penetration, mechanical protection, and complete coverage of all pores on the pipe surface, guarantee the durability of the pipe for many years and provide a similar lifespan to 3PLE coating for pipe protection. Also, easy installation, especially for large-sized pipes, makes them suitable for use in buried and submerged pipes.

The method of applying and installing these coatings varies depending on their model, but in general, it can be said that after preparing the surface for epoxy application and preheating, these tapes are placed around the pipe in the form of a sleeve (with the help of a closure patch) or a tube and are contracted by applying heat to the pipe.

If surface preparation is required, these coatings are placed on the pipe surface by preheating and applying solvent-free epoxy and shrinking by applying heat with a torch to the pipe surface and are ready for use after 24 hours but mastic ones doesn’t need epoxy and sand blast.

1- Adhesive: in two models: mastic and hot melt

2- Backing: according to the type of polymer material used like PE or PP

3- Application temperature: from 40 to 130 degrees

4- Shape and dimensions: in several models: sleeves wrap around and tubular tape

5- Implementation method: the need for preheating and surface preparation

Adhesive: One of the most important parts of heat shrinkable coatings is the adhesive part of these coatings. The main ingredients and materials of these types of coatings include butyl rubber, EVA resins, polyolefins, mastics, and … These adhesives prevent any contamination and dust from entering the pipe surface by creating a strong physical and chemical bond between the metal surface, epoxy, polyethylene coating and backing.

Solvent-free epoxy: This part, which is produced from two components, hardener and epoxy, is solely related to hot melt coatings and greatly strengthens the bond between the tape and the pipe surface.
